Super Yacht Radiant visits Vilamoura

The Super Yacht Radiant arrived at Vilamoura yesterday but you won’t see her in the Marina, she’s too big being 110m long!

She has a crew of 22 to look after the 20 guests she can accommodate.

The owner, a car dealer from the United Arab Emirates paid 280 million dollars for her including the helipad, gym, spa etc. and the extreme security systems, allegedly being fitted with an “escape” launch a speedboat capable of 75 knots, an arsenal of sonic guns that fire low frequency sound waves to pierce the eardrums of approaching assailants and a military water cannon capable of sinking an approaching boat at more than 100 meters.

Originally commissioned by Boris Berezovsky in an attempt to upstage Roman Abramovitch he allegedly didn’t keep up the payments and so she was sold on.

Portugal’s Route 66

Whilst not sounding as sexy as “Route 66″ Portugal’s “EN 2″ is apparently the world’s third longest road after Route 40 in Argentina (5,000 km) and the afore mentioned 66 (3945km) coming in at 738.5km.

It cuts through the Country from North to South starting almost at the northern border with Spain at the XIVth century Castle Chaves and heading south to the sea at Faro, crossing 4 mountain ranges and 11 rivers.

 

There are moves afoot to promote this 71 year old road as a tourist attraction for those who like to tour and with Faro having one of the most famous motor cycle clubs in Europe this looks promising.

New Yacht Club for Vilamoura

As part of the continuing enhancement of Vilamoura in Portugal’s Algarve Broadway Malyan  world wide architects founded in Weybridge (UK) in 1958 will be designing the new Yacht Club for the Marina.

The 825 berth facility has twice running won the International Marina of the Year in 2015 & 2016 awarded by The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA) at the London Boat Show.

The Iconic design is intended to further raise the Marina’s profile in the world of luxury boating which is proving a magnet for both those who wish to holiday in style or in fact live in a beautiful enviroment. Long Term Rentals in Vilamoura are proving ever more popular particularly amongst those wishing to take advantage of Portugal’s preferential treatment of retirees with foreign pensions, the so called Non Habitual Tax Resident status where ex pats can receive a 10 year tax holiday.

Vertical Running Vilamoura!

The 5th of March will see this years “Vertical Race” in Quarteira next to Vilamoura here in the Algarve.

Starting at 20:00 hours the competitors will run from the ground floor of a tower block up 20 floors, that is 350 steps to the top.

Algarve Mediterranean Garden Show

June will see the first ever major gardening show in the Algarve. The show ground will occupy 2.5 hectares of the grounds of the 5 star Vila Vita Parc Resort & Spa at Porches.

Spread over 2 days, Saturday the 11th & Sunday the 12th of June 2016 the event will see some of Europe’s top garden designers going head to head in a competition to win the Anneliese Pohl Award for the Best Show Garden. In addition there will be flower arranging competitions and demonstrations, art and sculpture exhibitions, live musical and theatrical entertainment as well as live cooking demonstrations from VILA VITA’s own Michelin starred Executive Chef, Hans Neuner. World renowned gardening celebrities will introduce and compare the internationally televised show, the like of which has never been seen before in Portugal.

Among the names speaking at the event that you may recognise are:

  • Joe Swift – BBC’s Gardeners World/Comic Relief/Alan Titchmarch’s show etc.
  • Pippi Greenwood – Radio 4’s Gardener’s Question time
  • Charlie Dimmock – BBC’s Groundforce
  • Tommy Walsh – BBC’s Groundforce
  • Plus many more eminently accomplished media gardeners.

Vilamoura Development Starts

The first project of the re kindled development of Vilamoura is scheduled to start this month, January 2016. It is phase 2 of the L’Orangerie next to Victoria Golf Course. The whole condominium will cover 70,000 m² and this crescent shaped section consists of 21,569 m².

Being built are 6 x 3 bedroomed Villas with their own pools, 18 x 2 bedroomed villas with private gardens and an inner courtyard and 8 x apartments ranging from 1 to 3 beds.

Target completion is summer 2017

Parcels sent from the UK to Portugal

Missing Christmas presents?

Many people have trouble receiving parcels sent by family or internet shops such as Amazon here in Portugal, below we try to offer some information and advice:

When people in the UK go to the Post Office ie the Royal Mail to send a parcel to Portugal there are a few options available, for future reference we recommend you always choose one which provides you with a “Tracking Number” sometimes called a bar code. This is a 13 character reference starting with 2 letters then 9 numbers and then 2 letters. If the sender gives you this number you can track the progress on the Royal Mail website:

https://www.royalmail.com/track-your-item

from your computer in Portugal. The counter staff should be able to advise the sender which service is which.

The Post Office send the parcel by plane to a Company called GLS who operate Europe wide so sometimes the parcel comes to Portugal via Germany etc etc.

Once the parcel is received by GLS you can track progress using the Royal Mail number on the GLS website in English at:

https://gls-group.eu/PT/en/parcel-tracking

for their own purposes GLS also issue the parcel with their own reference number “Track Id”.

I say supposed to work because they are totally dependent on the address being exactly correct. Plus if they cannot actually knock on your door or ring your bell (for instance if you live in a condominium without good doorbell system) or you are not in they have a dilemma. If you have a mailbox which is clearly marked they will leave a card in there saying what they have done with the parcel. It could be left with a neighbor if there is one, or most likely left at a local shop which acts as a “Parcel Shop” as well as carrying on it’s own business. In the case of Vilamoura it is a stationers in Quarteira called Papelnet, it will stay there for 9 days and then be sent back to the GLS depot. If they cannot find your house or your mail box they will return the parcel to their depot. If the parcel is not collected it will eventually be returned to sender.

As they are a huge operation carrying thousands of parcels you can’t get anywhere on the phone without a reference number. Having said that their Portuguese land line number is 707200607 and they can speak English if you ask. Their website has a facility to locate the nearest depot or parcel shop to you. If you are using their website there is a facility to change to English by clicking EN at the top right of each page.

Here is the crux. We have found that if the driver has a Portuguese phone number for you they will ring you and arrange to meet. We always instruct family to make the phone number part of the address so it is on the label stuck to the parcel. Our driver regognises the fact that it is a Portuguese mobile and uses his initiative to ring it. I believe Amazon actually have a place in the address fields for a phone number.

Below I show a real case of one of my Christmas presents, sent from Southampton (It was addressed to our office but this was closed for Christmas so a  card was left in the post box and it was collected from the parcel shop next day)

Magna Carta Lisbon

An original copy of the Magna Carta an 800-year-old charter, handwritten in Latin, which limited the power of the monarch and established human rights for everyone in England will be on display at Lisbon’s national archives from December 7 to 12.

It was signed by King John in 1215 in Runnymede, Surrey. Only four copies of the original 1215 Magna Carta remain in existence today, though it was updated through the years until the 17th century, and is believed to have influenced early American colonists and the formation of the American Constitution in 1787.

Vilamoura Triathlon

Sunday the 29th of November sees a major day for athletics in Vilamoura. There are actually 2 events a triathlon comprising a 21.1 km run, 1.9 km swim and a 91.5 km bike ride. The second is a Half Marathon.

As with all triathlons the first part is the swim and the participants will start from Vilamoura beach in front of Buzio’s bar at 10:00am. The route takes them almost 2 km between the walls of Vilamoura marina and Quarteira marina. They then transition from the beach to the 91.5 km bike ride heading out of town up towards Loule. Once back from the ride they transition to the run taking in both Quarteira beach front and Vilamoura marina.

Any one interested in watching will find the beach a good place to watch the start and anywhere on the Marina good for the final part.

Vilamoura Master Plan

As we reported last month the plans for Vilamoura were unveiled just 4 months after the Dallas based Lone Star acquired it. The video above shows the key areas involved and below we try to provide more details.

The operating Company is styled “Vilamoura World” and is hoping to attract € 1 billion of investment from others to achieve this. Some local reports wrongly thought that it was going to make the huge investment itself but that’s not how it works.

The outline plan nominates 18 plots of un developed land it owns and gives them individual names grouped under 5 themes as shown below. The 18 occupy an area of 4 million m²  with a total possible construction area of 680,000 m². Individually they range from 1,500 m² to 168,000 m².

The most ambitious will be the “Vilamoura Lakes” on the site of the long talked about, never started “New Marina.” The project has been morphed into 250,000m² of “Lakescape” which should be more acceptable to the environmental lobby, physically achievable and moving away from the glass and concrete artist impressions which were mooted for many years. The outline  is for some 5,000 residential units and  5 hotels with a total of 3,600 beds, supported by many retail and restuarant outlets. This has a target start date of 2017 subject of course to securing the investment. These plans would probably double the number of homes in the town to 10,000.

The marina has always been Vilamoura’s focal point and plans here are to dramatically spruce up the entrance with a new Yacht Club having a spa, gym and 3 restaurants, providing “An Iconic Entrance” to the marina from the sea, hopefully to become recognisable around the world.

Royal Ascot Vilamoura

The 20th of June is Ladies Day at Royal Ascot in England but Vilamoura will host it’s own “Virtual” version at Vila Sol. The event organised by Virtually There Events will emulate the 300 year old tradition with the same dress code and races streamed live to the venue. For those of you who don’t happen to have a full morning suit hanging in the wardrobe hire facilities are available.

There will be a wide variety of entertainment including Loryane Robinson, formally of the Three Degrees, who has been living in the Algarve for the past 6 years and a variety of catering facilities on offer, too many to list here. It is better to visit their excellent website by clicking this link but below are a few high lights:

  1. The Atlantic Piano Bar will provide the PIMMS + British Beverages
  2. The News Cafe will bring their Champagne & Oyster Bar
  3. Nougat Tea’N will provide a traditional tea room and Ice Cream cart
  4. The Hotel is offering  various dining options
  5. A number of British institutions are hosting their members

Vilamoura’s changing ownership

Vilamoura is a beautiful holiday destination  in Portugal’s Algarve, but many don’t realise that it didn’t exist 50 years ago.

It isn’t a village which developed into a tourist centre but instead was conceived deliberately as a holiday resort.

Many also choose to settle here, as with over 320 days of sunshine and interesting tax breaks for European retirees it is fast becoming the base of choice for those looking for a safe warm place to emigrate to.

The infographic below shows the time line of ownership which changed  an area of open fields to possibly one of the best beach destinations in Europe. With it’s 1000 berth marina, winner of this years International Marina award at the London boat show, 6 championship class Golf courses, home of the Portugal Masters and miles of beautiful beaches it holds something for everyone.

So the sale of Vilamoura which we discussed back in February is now public knowledge. The new owners, Lone Star a private equity firm that invests in distressed assets, based in Dallas, Texas (quote) “intend to strengthen and revive the resort through a long-term investment plan…”

So as they say, let’s watch this space.

Blue Run Algarve

May the 3rd sees The Blue Run around Quinta do Lago, starting and finishing at the Conrad Hotel. The starting gun for the 10k race goes at 10:30 though those wishing to walk the course depart at 10:00. This is the second of these events, the first was held last year in Vilamoura.

This year Loule is heralded as a European City of Sport and is keen to promote healthy activities to locals and visitors alike. For it’s part the Conrad will host a number of entertainment stalls and bouncy castles for the kids from mid day.

Blue Run

  • 1st prize: weekend for 2 at the Conrad
  • 2nd prize: weekend for 2 at the Hilton Double Tree Lisbon
  • 3rd prize: Spa treatment (60 minutes) at the Conrad
  • 4th to 10th prizes: “Spa Experience” at the Conrad

The entry fee is from € 7.5 to € 15 depending on how soon you book.

Land Registration in Portugal

Do you own a property in Algarve? Then this is important to you…

Put simply the Portuguese land registry is not up to date and the decision was taken to rectify this via a national project entitled “SiNErGIC”, with the Loule region being one of the first areas chosen. The key name is “Cadastro Predial” where the owner makes a “Declaração de Titularidade”

This was to commence from 30th August 2013 and all owners are obliged to formally register their boundaries with the local authorities. Originally this was to be completed by July 2014 but has since been extended to 29th May 2015. Areas outside of the Loule region will follow.

Once you realise that the central records are not accurate this make perfect sense for owners for their own protection and to avoid potential conflict with neighbours and this is how it is marketed. It also offers the government an opportunity to check if anyone has illegally extended their boundaries via a “land grab”, this is not mentioned in the marketing.

For the purpose of this project property can be considered as being one of four types:

  1. Part of a condominium.
  2. A detached house possibly with a garden and pool.
  3. A detached house with an attached plot of land.
  4. A plot of land.

In case 1 the responsibility lies with the appointed Administration, in cases 2, 3 & 4 it lies with the owner. If done within the allocated time there is no fee, if it is not done a fee and as yet undefined penalties may be payable.

Vilamoura Half Marathon

Next Sunday, March the 8th will see Vilamoura’s first Half Marathon.

Starting and finishing in the marina the course will follow an interesting route west and then around millennium and back to town.

The course markers are already in place:

Green  – half marathon
Orange – mini marathon
Red – Handbikes

As of this morning entries had just passed 1,000 so it will definitely be a busy day around the marina and you never know who may show up!

Tour de Algarve 2015

The 2015 Tour of Algarve will start tomorrow on Wednesday the 18th of February and conclude in Vilamoura on Sunday the 22nd. The stages are:

  1. Wed – Lagos to Albufeira – 168 kms
  2. Thurs – Lagoa to Monchique – 192 kms
  3. Fri 20th – Vila do Bispo to Cape St. Vincent 18.2 kms
  4. Sat 21st – Taveira to Malhão – 212 kms
  5. Sunday – Almodovar to Vilamoura 178 kms

Unfortunately the official website isn’t live yet so we can’t show the actual course or the expected finish timing in Vilamoura. Last year the finish line was by the petrol station at 3pm with access by cars blocked off for the afternoon. Expect a huge turn out and traffic confusion but a great spectacle for all!

Regatta in Vilamoura

This weekend Vilamoura Marina holds it’s 41st annual regatta to coincide with Carnival. This year there are 382 entrants across the 9 classes with races concluding on Monday.
